The first Chop Chop Ninja game was a ton of fun. It was a platform action game that had many of us hooked. With how popular and successful Chop Chop Ninja was, I am sure that many of us were quite hopeful that there would be a sequel. Well, that time is now my friends, but the big question is does it manage to improve on the original Chop Chop Ninja?
Chop Chop Ninja World looks great. It has that classic side scrolling platform game look. It actually looks like it would fit right at home on the Super Nintendo as it has a really nice 16-bit look to it. Well a 16-bit look that has been given a glorious HD makeover. The whole world that this game is set in looks great, but all the characters that you will come across also look really good. It is funny when you are exploring an area if you take a moment to look you will notice just how many little details are in each area of the game.
There is a story in Chop Chop Ninja World, but sadly it really does not go the extra mile over the first game. You are a ninja who needs to save a princess and that pretty much sums up the whole story. There are a few characters in the game who will flesh out the story a little bit, but I really wish they would have gotten a little deeper into the games story. To be fair the story does give you a purpose to be playing the game, just a little more back story here and there would have been nice.
At first I was really confused by the controls. You see when I play a platform game my years of gaming instinct dictate that controller is on the left and action buttons are on the right. That is not the case here. Instead it goes for the control scheme of touching where you want your ninja to go and touching who you want him to attack. The funny thing is after about 5 minutes of me not liking the controls now I could not imagine playing this game any other way. So while it does have a learning curve it is a very small one.
There are a few new game mechanics that have been introduced most notably for me was the ability to throw things like rocks. You can throw a rock at a bad guy or you may need to hit a switch to save someone.
As well as the new game play mechanics the big new feature of Chop Chop Ninja World is the way the game is set out. The first Chop Chop Ninja game had traditional levels such as level 1-1 then level 1-2 and so on. Here we have a big open world where each level is one huge map. Rather than splitting it up into smaller sections. This does a great job of making the kingdom seem really huge and making your quest seem even more epic.
If that is not enough there are many more aspects to the game. My favourite is the kingdom building portion. Here you can build your own kingdom for you to play through. What makes this mode so great is the way that your friends can play the kingdom that you have build and likewise you can play a kingdom that they have built.
Chop Chop Ninja World is a free-to-play game, but it is a free-to-play game with a difference. Yes, to get all of the cool weapons you will need to spend some real money. However it is possible to beat this game without spending a single penny. This is one of the best and most interesting action platform games I have had the pleasure to play in a very long time.
