When it was first released on the Playstation 2 in 2001 Grand Theft Auto II was a game changer. Now I am someone who really does not like to use that term, but there is no better term to describe what Grand Theft Auto III did. While it may not be considered the best in the series. This is still a great way to see how Grand Theft Auto made the transition from 2D to 3D.
Now in terms of the games visuals I have a felling some people may look at this and think that it is ugly. And while it may not be as pretty as some of the newer games on the iOS. You have to remember that this game is the better part of 15 years old now. There have been a few graphical improvements here and there, but there are still some things that while not a big deal in 2001 are quite alarming in 2013. The draw distance and the way things can just pop up can be a bit annoying, but it is not a deal breaker by any means. Instead it just reminds me of how far games have come.
While the graphics may not be as cutting edge as there were in 2001. The charm of the game is still here. All the crazy and dastardly stuff you loved to do in 2001 is just as much fun in 2013. Is there a person who has played Grand Theft Auto III who has not killed a hooker? (of course I am talking about in the game) Well now you can do it on your iPad just like you did on your Playstation 2.
Game play I will fully admit that I was sceptical of how you could play Grand Theft Auto on a device without a analogue stick and a whole bunch of buttons. Well to there credit Rockstar have done a wonderful job of creating a control scheme that for the most part works really well.
The control is nice and smooth and most of all it is really fun. The somewhat amusing to me problem with the game is something I had issues with back in 2001. The camera every now and again can be a problem, but for the most part it is great. Also the auto targeting on more than one occasion I am sure you will pump a innocent citizen full of lead because the game will target them instead of a rival gangster. These two issues are not because of the transition the game has made to the iOS at all. These are a couple of small issues that were in the original game.
The driving sections on the other hand and amazing. Rockstar have made a great control scheme and driving around the streets of Liberty City really is a joy. The cars just handle so well if you do run down some civilians by mistake it is because of your driving skills not because of the controls.
Grand Theft Auto III is just as good as you remember it being. Yes other games in the series have vastly improved the series, but this is still a game that will give you hours and hours of fun. No mater if you are playing through the story or just go on a all out rampage through the city. At five bucks this game is an absolute steal.
