The physics based driving game was one of those genres that I thought would be well and truly over saturated on the iOS market place. There is a ton of these type games on PC that you can play through your browser. Well I was wrong while there is a few of these physics based driving games for whatever reason it is a genre that I feel has been overlooked by developers. Hill Climb Racing aims to show people that a game like this can be just as much fun on your iOS device as it is one a computer.
Graphics wise Hill Climb Racing is a very basic looking game. Not in a bad way, but there are parts of the background that look like they were made in Microsoft paint. I am not putting the game down for this as I feel that it adds a great deal of charm to the game.
Game play is where this game really stands out. The funny thing is the first time I played Hill Climb Racing I thought it was terrible. I thought the controls were really awkward, but the truth is they are not and this is actual a design of the game. You see Hill Top Racing is all about upgrading your car to make it drive better.
The idea of the game is quite simple you need to drive as far as you can without flipping your car over all the while collecting coins and doing big jumps. Which trust me you will do over and over again. At first it is rather amusing as when you flip your car as the guy behind the wheel will end up with a broken neck. But the downside is when this happens you go back to the start of the level.
You will get to a certain part of the game where you simply cannot progress. This is not a bug or anything like that. This is where the various upgrades come in and it is why you have been collecting coins. There are four different areas of your car that you can improve, but you really need to improve each one little by little to give you the best chance of driving as far as possible.
This is no mindless driving game. Hill Climb Racing is a game that require finesse. You see the levels are so varied that at some points you can just put the foot down and go crazy. Where as other times you will need to work the break to delicately make it past a tricky area without flipping over your car. This is really challenging, but it feels so rewarding once you have mastered the games controls.
I had a lot of fun with Hill Climb Racing, but I am not going to lie it took me a good 15 minutes to really get into the game. And this is my worry that many people will be put off by the way the car controls when you first play the game. I say stick with it and you will find that this is one fun and addictive little game.
